How to communicate with clarity and purpose.

Clear communication is essential in these troubling times. It helps to think out key points and desired outcome in advance using the AIDA framework. This video explains how to use this framework and become an effective communicator.

The AIDA technique is a useful framework that can assist you in planning important communication. Here is how to apply it:

A stands for Attention – good openers address problems or introduce opportunities. This gains the attention of the person you are addressing in a compelling way.

I stands for Interest – develop the theme with stimulating information and evidence of your proposed approach to deal with the problem or opportunity. You work to generate interest and thereby commit to a way forward.

D stands for Desire – this sets out the benefits of your proposal – ‘Why are you suggesting this approach?’ and specifically ‘What’s in it for them’.

A stands for Action – this clearly states the preferred option and next steps. When done well, it ends with an agreement for specific action by the other party and yourself.

Having a structure doesn't mean each conversation is tightly scripted—quite the reverse. Thinking out the main reason for communication and being mindful of what you want to achieve will allow you to relax. Then you can listen as well as speak and enjoy the flowing exchange of viewpoints and ideas spontaneously.
