Publish The Positive

A constant stream of negative news led me to study positive psychology. From both my academic work and personal experience, I suggest that we need to turn our attention to solutions-focused news, for the benefit of ourselves and the wider world

Why is it important to understand the psychological consequence of consuming the news? Most fundamentally, the reason for this is because it does have a consequence. The news media provide a powerful stream of information, which we inescapably consume; the news connects us to events that we are unable to experience first hand as well as help us make sense of those events that we are able to experience. These stories that we tell or choose not to tell ourselves about society and its participants influence our understanding of the world and helps shape our opinions and beliefs.

Research has previously focused on the detrimental psychological, behavioral and societal consequences of reading predominantly negative news, including, but not limited to, anxiety, learned helplessness, lower mood levels, contempt and hostility towards others and in some cases, this negativity bias can lead to complete avoidance of the news. My research is showing that including solutions focused news as part of a balanced media diet is associated with increased levels of optimism, hope, resilience, engagement, active coping, effective problem solving, improved mood and altruistic behaviour.
