Week 34: Just say no
An empowering way to edit life..
This week I have said no to…
- A book I was a third of the way through and really wasn’t gripping me. As an avid reader I deliberated about this for two days. I initially felt I wasn’t completing something I had started and so letting myself down. I was confused as to why others had rated it so highly, yet I couldn’t settle with it. Once I had decided that really I would rather do something else I felt a little jump of joy. I now had time to read another book or sit and contemplate the clouds!
- Pain! I have had a bad shoulder for weeks now but have finally gone to a physio to get it sorted. A bit of self-care here!
- My habit of self-deprecation to make others feel better about themselves. A bit more profound this. I have said no to this habit because I have had enough of it really. As a generally confident woman, I decided to be more honest in this respect – celebrating the wonder in others but also myself!
- A book group that I have been a member of for 7 years. From September I have a lot on in terms of work and family. I am teaching an A level subject I have never taught before and my two eldest children are sitting GCSEs and A levels respectively. In addition to this, my youngest is starting secondary and my very oldest- my mum- is needing me more than ever. I once read that something has to take a back seat: family, career or a rip-roaring social life! Well, family is my core. I work full time at the moment because I have to, but have already decided that I will not chase promotion (and I am lucky in that I love teaching and the people I work with). So social life? I have a group of amazing friends and we could go out a lot more but I know my limitations: horrendous hangovers, need for sleep, not being able to fit in all the stuff of life at the weekend etc…. So now when we socialise it needs to be in situations that will relax, excite, inspire. By saying no to some social ties that may not fit into life now, I am saying yes to a more fulfilled life full of events which I look forward to and that includes watching the telly with my husband on a Friday night!
So my week has been fruitful. I am all for a good old edit of life and this experiment allowed me to review and refresh on many levels. On reading this though, I may have to say no to the over use of exclamation marks!
