Eat when hungry
This might give you something to chew on (ahem)
This week’s experiment although easy on paper was asking me to look deep into one of my habitual routines; eating food at certain times of the day. For the record I eat some cereal a couple of hours after I get up, a meal sometime between 2pm-4pm and I might snack a little later in the day. This challenge was stopping me and telling me to get in touch with my body. I found this exciting and a bridge I needed to cross in my ‘wake up’ journey.
It’s drummed in to almost every one of us from a very early age what is expected from eating and when to do it; breakfast, dinner (you call it lunch if you’re posh), tea (just to confuse you it’s called dinner if you’re posh, ahem) and supper. Actually one of my best friends calls dinner “lunch” and tea ‘dinner” but I always tell him he came from the posh part of our town. He lived in a part of our ‘new-town’ that was more famous for burnt out cars than anything else. Maybe they seen these burnt out cars as art… Makes you think.
Anyway, because of our culture and work practice and not to mention our love life and family life this system, of controlled eating continues for the rest of our life. On the odd occasion I have a bowl of cereal late on (usually after a couple of beers) I feel stupid for eating a morning meal in the late evening/night. But why? Also I wouldn’t think of eating a Chinese meal at any other time than after three or four in the afternoon. Of course the exception occurs the day after a night out. It’s at that time it tastes even better! You’ve got to love Chinese food. So maybe it was a good thing to shake it up.
Why are we so controlled by these constraints of eating? Is it to fit in to society? Is it to give us a structure to our day or life? Is it good practice? Is it just ‘human’ to do so? I don’t know the answer but this week made me think outside the box and just like the stuffocation experiment earlier in ‘wake up’ this may well have personal far reaching effects for me. This challenge makes me feel alive and young in blood. Just like stuffocation I can feel the stirring of a revolution in my mind. If the same positive effect occurs like the stuffocation effect it will be life changing for the better. So you will have to bear with me for now and see where I go with this… it’s got legs and it’s walking, I wonder how far it will walk? Who cares I’m awake and I’m walking and I’m unafraid of where the journey will take me. I didn’t start ‘wake up’ to stand still. I’m not alone and I’m not on a one way road either.
And you know what, I don’t care how arrogant it sounds but I’m waking up and looking at things differently! I feel like I’m moving forward with my life. I am the Changing Man!
I love life, new concepts and change! For now I will most definitely only eat when I’m hungry.
SARAH: What are we having for tea?
MARK: Sort yourself out I’m not hungry. When I’m hungry, I’ll fill my belly.
SARAH: Do you fancy a Chinese?
MARK: Yeah go on then! I feel like I could murder a Cantonese style king prawn sweet and sour. I think I’ll have some prawn toast too.
Life is great. Enjoy it while you’ve got one to enjoy. Eat when you’re hungry!
MARK: I might have some spring rolls and seaweed. What I don’t finish I’ll have in the morning anyway.
PS: I’ve just eaten a cheese and onion pasty for my breakfast because I wanted to and it was delicious and I don’t even feel stupid for doing so!
