Mid Year Reflection and Resolutions
It's that time of year - the kids are back at school, the nights will soon be drawing in and before you know it Christmas will be on its way...
Weeks can feel as though they're slipping by quickly and all too often we get to the end of another year, look back and wonder if we achieved everything/anything we set out to. This is why, I reflect on those months that have been and gone at this point in the year. I think about all those things I have achieved or I've tried to achieve. It's so important to celebrate those goals reached or even attempted because not only does it motivate us to either keep going or to progress to the next goal, it helps us understand how we have grown and what we've learnt from the experience.
After a bit of reflection, I personally also like to make a few "mid year's resolutions." I tend to do this, because it helps me continue to move forward and by making resolutions part way through the year, I relieve that external pressure sometimes associated with New Year's resolutions.
We are the Mischief Makers!
I recently re-watched one of my favourite films of all time - Breakfast at Tiffany's. I love this film for so many reasons, but in my most recent viewing, I was inspired by the playfulness of Holly Golightly's character. During one scene in the movie, Holly comes up with the idea to spend a whole day doing things she's never done before, just for fun. This got me thinking - how many of us spend so much time "adulting" each day, we forget to incorporate a bit of play into the mix? In my opinion, play is just as important for adults as it is for children. Play can help us relax, problem-solve, enhance our emotional wellbeing, build relationships, not to mention ignite our creativity and imagination. With all of those benefits and more, I'll definitely make a little more room in my life for mischief, silliness and fun. After all, all work and no play...
It's the Little Things...
I have to admit post summer holiday, I'd completely lost my back to work mojo this year. On my return to Blighty, I struggled to find the motivation for pretty much
EVERYTHING. Normally, I'd be back into the swing of things after a few days, but this year I was still out of kilter nearly two weeks after I’d come home from my travels. Realising I didn’t want this feeling to continue indefinitely, I decided to do something really simple to help shift my frame of mind. I made a to-do list - not an overwhelming list of big jobs or projects, but a list with small tasks where I could take immediate action, get the jobs done and get them ticked off. (I love that feeling of ticking things off a to-do list!) This small act was the catalyst that moved me into a productive mindset, so by the time I went back into work on the following Monday, I was ready to crack on. Sometimes, it’s the little things that make a big difference!
Saturday breakfasts are one of my favourite treats of the week. As I normally don't need to get up and get out the door first thing on a Saturday morning, I like to make something a bit different. One quick and simple brekkie I've been enjoying recently is eggs, tomatoes and avocado on toast. As you'll see, the ingredients are fairly self-explanatory...
A handful of cherry tomatoes
2 slices of toast
salt and pepper for seasoning
- Boil the eggs in a pan: 3 minutes for soft boiled, 6 minutes for hard boiled.
- Place the cherry tomatoes and olive oil in a dish and heat for around two and a half minutes in the microwave.
- Slice the avocado and place on the toast.
- When the eggs are boiled, slice and put on top of the avocado.
- Once the tomatoes have heated, drizzle them over the eggs and avocado. Season with the salt and pepper, then serve.
Usually enjoyed with a cuppa and my copy of the latest Psychologies magazine, it's the perfect way to start the weekend.
