I’m a former solicitor with over 25 years' experience in family law, and the author of "A better way of dealing with divorce: a guide for parents who want to keep out of court, and save their money and sanity". Divorce can be a traumatic time and it’s normal for emotions to run riot. But it’s unrealistic to expect traumatised brains to make good decisions and divorcing couples have to make some of the biggest and hardest decisions of their life. Our adversarial legal system does not serve them well; they each have to go to separate solicitors who will push very hard to get the best results for their individual clients. This often results in conflict between the couple, and they can easily find themselves in a hugely expensive court battle which neither of them wanted or needed. Divorce is an emotional event, which has many financial and practical consequences, and a few legal ones. So why is our first port of call to a solicitor? I am now able to see both parties, either separately or together, which solicitors are not allowed to do. This keeps the lines of communication open and reduces the likelihood of them getting into a fight. My priority is always the children, and the worst thing for children is parents who fight. I help parents who want an amicable divorce to find solutions that are in the best interests of the whole family, even though they will be living in different places. I also help with less amicable situations (but only working with one party) such as where there is parental alienation or one parent has narcissistic personality disorder, an addiction or a mental health problem.
