A spiritual being coping in the corporate world
Being true to you when working in the corporate world can be tough. Spiritual talk is considered to be hippy, a bit 'out there' or 'woo woo'. But it is possible to keep connected in this environment as I found out.
It was particularly difficult for me when I experienced my spiritual awakening about 4 years ago and after that felt I had to hide who I really was from my work colleagues, for fear of them questioning my sanity (this did happen a couple of times!) and the ability to do my job.
You see, my awakening was the result of being professionally bullied in the workplace, by a number of senior male colleagues. After being forced out of my job, I had lost direction in my life and no longer recognised the person staring back at me in the mirror. The only thing I wanted to do was escape to the middle of nowhere, where no one could find me. Always being a lover of the countryside, I retreated to a remote spot in beautiful Kent to seek nurture and lick my wounds. It was here that my whole inner journey started to unfold and all of the jigsaw pieces began to fit together.
Working in these stressful and demanding environments, my soul was crying to be heard. My ego had kicked in at work, I had become tough with the harshness and created my beliefs based on a material world. It was in this beautiful Kent retreat, that I started to listen and hear the inner voice of my soul telling me it was all going to be ok, a life-changing moment was taking place.
As a sense of calmness started to sweep over me, I faced the reality of my financial responsibilities - I had bills to pay and I needed to be smart. Whilst I had my huge wake-up call and discovered what I wanted to do with my life, I had to step back into the corporate world to keep living and this was going to be the tough part. However, I made a promise that this time it was going to be different. I had a handle on my work-life balance and continued to remind myself that it was just a job and not my life. This made a massive difference to my mindset each day, knowing that it was a means to getting where I knew I had to be and where I wanted to be.
Returning to a new corporate contract, I introduced a spiritual practice that helped to keep me connected with my soul and on track with my purpose and life goals. It needed to be simple, easy and not too time consuming, so that I could fit it in around the busy work days and still feel like I was being true to me.
Here are my top 5 daily spiritual practices that helped to keep me going:-
- As I’d wake each morning, I’d reel in my mind the wonderful things I had in my life that I was thankful for and see the blessings in everything. Even on those tough days, I was able to see something positive and a new experience for me to learn and grow from.
- Before leaving for work, I'd visualise a purple bubble around me for protection. Closing my eyes and imagining a purple ray of light around my entire body, I'd repeat in my mind that this bubble would help protect me from the harsh energies that I'd come into contact with over the course of the day. In my mind, I'd expand the bubble and know that nothing could impact my positive vibes - which would be challenging on my work commute and then in the office. Throughout the day I would need to ‘top-up’ this bubble if I started to struggle, which would happen normally around lunchtime!
- I’m a huge fan of crystals, their healing energy is powerful when charged. Being a sensitive soul to both people and environmental energy, I would laden myself down with rose quartz for self-worth, snowflake obsidian for protection and hematite to keep me grounded. When I’d get home at night, I would burn insence to cleanse any harsh energy from the day.
- Meditation is a big thing for me and is now non-negotiable daily practice! However, when I was working in the corporate world it was a struggle to settle a rhythm of practice during long hours and feeling wiped out at the end of the day. So, I’d commit at least once a week on a weekend, a solid meditiation to connect and cleanse my chakras. There are some great guided meditations on YouTube that I'd listen to.
- Learning to be mindful and in the moment was a huge lesson for me; working as a consultant I’d live away from home in the week and was always counting down the days to coming home or the end date of my contract, so being in the moment was tough to begin with. I discovered that when I was just 'being' I actually took notice of how my colleagues were, what was going on in the office and being mindful in meetings; hearing what was being said rather than wondering what I’d have for dinner that night! It also helped to focus on my breath and feel my physical body, as I took notice of sitting at my desk or eating lunch. A powerful technique which is super simple and can be done all the time.
These practices helped me to cope and keep connected with my soul whilst earning the pennies. They still form as part of my daily practice now, although in a slightly different way.
I learnt that when you're not being authentic in your work and even your personal life, it can have serious impacts on both your physical and mental health. It's important to always remain true to you and if people don't get you, that's ok. You're here to shine and do your thing, the right people always find you.
