Prescribing Yoga on the NHS: A Growing Revolution
Bringing yoga into the NHS.
The title of the linked article from the Guardian above is 'Should yoga be part of NHS care?'. YES, we say!
Dr Matt Joslin, the Manchester-based GP whose letter imploring the NHS to prescribe yoga went viral a couple of months ago, is now handing out vouchers for a free yoga class courtesy of staff at his practice who are convinced that yoga deserves a more prominent part in NHS care. Dr Matt Joslin developed these vouchers following powerful Facebook support for an open letter he wrote to the NHS in Janu...ary appealing for greater incorporation of the Indian exercise and mindfulness techniques into day-to-day healthcare. The letter received 17,000 Facebook shares.
Astonished at the reaction, Dr Joslin has added to his sixteen years as a yoga practitioner by training to teach the Ashtanga form of the practice. He plans to start giving one class a week from June onwards at Studio 25, and later in the the basement at The Docs when work has been carried out to convert it into a yoga studio, with a physiotherapist also on hand to tackle a range of musculoskeletal problems. We are truly humbled to have Dr. Joslin as part of our Yoga4NHS group and believe this is just the beginning of an important and desperately needed revolution!
