OK let's dive in to today's Life Changing Thought: Curiosity is your secret weapon.
One of the most attractive traits that you can display is that of CURIOSITY. After first visual impressions, your level of curiosity is the next best way of making a great lasting impression on someone. It underpins communication and will, without a doubt, make you more attractive to others both in your professional and personal life.
As a coach, curiosity is one of my greatest tools. Without questions, my clients wouldn't achieve the breakthroughs and gain the insights that make coaching so effective as a means of facilitating growth, change and development.
If you really want to get along with other people there is no better start than showing genuine interest in them. It's not about grilling or interrogating them. Similarly it's not about asking the banal 'what do you do for a living?' or worse still 'how are you doing?' questions either. It's about getting to know someone better, starting a conversation that begins with THEM. For example, if you're inviting someone for a meal, you will want to know if they have allergies. If the person you're speaking with is a new customer you might want to ask if they know anyone else who already uses your product or service, so that you can thank that person for the recommendation.
It's important to remember that the type of questions you ask will be determined by the situation you are in. You'll ask a very different kind of question if this is a first date compared to a business meeting with a potential new client or customer.
As a former matchmaker and relationship coach, I saw and heard my fair share of first date horror stories. To ensure that your first dates stand a better chance of getting to a 2nd date put curiosity on the top of your list of things to BE on a date. The biggest complaints I heard were always about how much the other person talked about themselves and their past relationships. A first date is about getting to know someone new. If you remember that, you'll be one step ahead of the competition.
I used to deliver a talk at networking events about how dating and networking were like twins. The key message from that talk was GET CURIOUS because no-one wants to do business or have a second date with someone who is only interested in themselves.
