How to beat distraction using the AWARE framework

How Distraction can throw you off and how using AWARE will help you stay focused

What happens when you get distracted?

You fall.

For me that meant literally!

If you're anything like me, you're a master at juggling a million things. You're always thinking, planning, doing. However, the key to successfully achieving your objectives and goals is to remain focussed on one thing at a time. Distractions are your productivity enemy.

I’m sailing our narrow boat this week. Moving her 98 miles along the canal network to her new mooring.

It WAS going great.

But something knocked me off my game, and off the boat...

There was a boat following me. It felt a bit like that movie Duel - from the 1970’s

The more I thought about the boat following me, the more distracted I got.

I decided to moor up and let them pass. They were going so fast they pulled my boat from one mooring pin and the front end began to spin out into the canal.

What on earth was I thinking as I leapt up onto the boat to grab the now falling rope?

Here's the thing.

I’d let the DISTRACTION completely distract me.

As a result, I fell head first into the cratch (the bit at the front of the boat), narrowly missing impaling myself on the anchor and skimming the razor sharp edge of the chimney stack (which I’d put there for safe keeping after I rescued it from the cut earlier in the day after it fell in while I was aground - yes, it was a very eventful day!)

This is what happens when you allow DISTRACTION to control your ACTION.

There are only so many things that you can influence, only so many things you can control. The rest? Don't let them occupy space in your thoughts.
Don't get distracted by them!

Generally, I'm pretty good at catching distraction before it results in calamity. I do it by using a really nifty framework that I created, which I thought I'd share with you:

It's called AWARE

A - acknowledge the distraction.

W - wait, do nothing, because sometimes just acknowledging it is enough to disarm it and move it along.

A - ask powerful questions if it doesn't take the hint and go of it's own accord.

R - reframe your response to the experience

E - elevate your thoughts, beliefs and mindset.

As a result of following this framework you will have cleared a block, and installed a new way of being that you can apply over and over again.

Let me know if you try this the next time you feel yourself getting distracted.
