How Can Coaching Help With Redundancy

Redundancy can bring with it a myriad of emotions - apprehension, anger, excitement, loss, fear, a sense of freedom.

As well as the very real situation of finding yourself out of work, the impact can be far-reaching:

  • Your daily routine disappears
  • Worry over finances
  • Increased stress affects your mood
  • Fears over the prospect of facing ageism or being seen as over-qualified
  • Living in a state of confusion, not knowing what to do or where to start
  • Low confidence or self-esteem as initial job applications are rejected or not even replied to.

Working with a Career Coach who has a track record of supporting people just like you to get back into work can help you both emotionally and practically.

You might want to:

  • Explore all the options that now exist - traditional full-time/part-time employment, self-employment, interim work or to create a portfolio of work "gigs" and determine what's right for you.
  • Discover who you are and what's really important to you
  • Understand what you have to offer and how to market that effectively
  • Learn strategies to handle demotivation, family pressures and low confidence.

Client Story

Sitting home alone whilst looking for work can be isolating.  My client Pauline* was a Senior Buyer who had been made redundant.  Suddenly she was not in the thick of her team or dealing with clients and suppliers.  Her vibrant and busy work life had been replaced - now Pauline* was sat alone at her kitchen table, with laptop and kettle.  She'd started her job search, researching and researching, not sure really what she wanted to do next - perhaps she should move out of the Retail Sector....but What else could she do?  Was she really good enough to try anything else?  Would an employer even look at her with no Sector experience?

I often say that Coaching gives you "the time and the space to hear yourself speak".  (Taken from a famous quote from Charles Handy "I cannot think until I have heard myself speak.")  Being encouraged to speak aloud your thoughts and answer curious questions often leads to insights and information you hold, that you were not previously consciously aware of.

Through our time together, Pauline* found that she had a real interest in marketing and specifically in branding. She discovered she wanted work where she could use her creative talents, problem solve and interact with clients. She completed some training and is now enjoying her new job with a local digital marketing agency.

Summary

Redundancy can be a difficult time and, as with any loss, may mean a period of grieving.  It is also the start of a new chapter in your life - make it the best chapter ever.

Good Luck!
