Empower Yourself in 7 Steps

Are you ready to feel more empowered? Are you ready to take that all-important action you've been putting off? Use International Women's Day and these 7 steps to support and empower you to move forwards in life or love today. It's your time.

If you're anything like me, you'd like to feel more empowered. You'd like to feel more able to achieve your dreams, to speak your truth, to thrive, flourish and be free. In short, you'd like to become the woman, man or person you were always meant to be.

Today, on International Women's Day, I'm in the mood for greater empowerment, for myself and for others.

For me, it feels time - time to take even bigger strides on my journey to freedom.

Time to renew my commitment to break multi-generational patterns of self-abandonment, self-neglect, shame, silence and self-sabotage, to be the woman my Mum, my Nana and the women before them didn't have the opportunities or the resources to be. 

I am about to turn 50 (on Saturday) and my mother recently died. I have no parents and no children. This feels hugely significant - a time of great shifts; a time of grief, healing and new opportunities.

In many ways, I am free. Yet some chains remain and I would like to break them, so that I can empower myself fully and use my gifts to empower others.

Much to my annoyance, though, because I can be an impatient soul, empowerment doesn't happen overnight.

We can't just snap our fingers and let go of the patterns and behaviours that have ruled our lives for decades. In many cases, they helped us to survive, which is why it can feel so frightening, life-threatening even, to let them go.

But we can take small, intentional, meaningful steps in order to feel more empowered.

Here are 7 steps you can take today:

1) Connect to your inner source of power

Breathe deeply. Connect to your life source. As you breathe in, feel the power of your sustaining breath. Allow your lungs to expand and as they do, allow yourself to take up more space, to feel taller, larger, more visible. As you breath out, relax, let go and continue to take up that extra space, to stand tall, to hold your ground, to be seen. Allow your breath to steady and support you and to empower you.

2) Connect to an outer source of power

Look around you, above you and below you. Connect with something greater than yourself: Earth, Nature, the Universe, God, Spirit, Love, whatever speaks to you. Lean into this power. Imagine yourself leaning in to it, resting on it, being held by an invisible presence. You are not alone. You don't have to do it all on your own. There is a safety net.

3) Set an intention

In which area of your life would you like to feel more empowered? Which of your dreams would you like to focus on? What important action are you procrastinating over? Choose one intention for today or this week. It might be: to speak your truth, to stand up for yourself, to ask for a pay rise or increase your prices, to find the time to create something beautiful, to explore a new direction, to take steps on your journey to a healthy, loving relationship.

4) Identify your obstacles

What stands in your way? What blocks you from moving forwards and creating the life and/or relationship you dream of? What keeps you feeling small and disempowered? If the answer is fear, get clear on the nature of that fear. Is it fear of failure, of getting hurt, of loving and losing, of being seen, of being criticised or judged? If you have a negative core belief, get clear on that belief. Also, understand where these fears and beliefs come from so that you can uproot them.

5) Get support

What support do you need to overcome your obstacles, walk through your fears or overturn negative beliefs and patterns? Do you need to reach out to a friend, a counsellor or a coach? Do you need to join a course or a group? Self-reliance can only get us so far. We need support and accountability to get to the next level. I know this from experience.

6) Take one action

Choose a single action you can take to feel more empowered and to move you further towards your dream or goal. Is there a phone call you need to make, a message you need to send, some work you need to do? Do you need to arrange a date with someone or schedule a fun activity? Do you need to practice self-care? Reach out for support, take the action and then check in again with your accountability person.

7) Celebrate yourself

For some of us, this is the hardest step but it's so important to congratulate ourselves when we take difficult actions, when we walk through our fears and overcome our obstacles, no matter how small or big they are. Only in this way will the child inside us feel valued and loved, and only then will she feel ready and willing to take further actions. So pat yourself on the back. Take yourself outside for 20 minutes. Play some music and dance. Or treat yourself to something special, now or in the near future.

Return to this 7-step process every day or every time you feel stuck: connect to your self, connect to something greater so that you feel held, set a clear intention, identify and understand the obstacles in your way, get plenty of support, take an action with support, and celebrate!
