When bad things happen, it is easy to believe that life isn't fair and feel totally overwhelmed.
It's so easy to sink into self pity, to lay in bed with the curtains closed, Alanis Morrissette on full blast, a bottle of wine and a box of tissues... Crying, weeping, wailing, a good chunk of drama, hand to forehead, perhaps some swooning.
But you know what? That's not going to help ANYTHING! It won't change the circumstances that are making you feel shitty and though it momentarily may feel like the only way you can react, it will not help you feel better.
So you have to make a choice. Every day you can make a choice that however this day goes, you will try to deal with it positively.
Don't get me wrong, we all still have moments when we are sad and need to have a big, snotty cry. I'm not suggesting we always be bundles of sunshine!! It is really important that we talk about the negative things as well as the positive, but the most important part of leading a happy life is how we deal with stress.
So try. Every day try to stay positive. To be mindful. To think of the good things in your life. To stay centred. To take ten minutes to meditate. To appreciate. To be grateful. To love. And to be loved.
Being happy is an option. No matter how shit life may seem, whatever is thrown at you, you can make the decision to try to be happy, to take control of whatever you can, no matter how small.
It's hard to find any positivity in some situations but the important thing is to accept how you feel but not allow one bad thing to take over your whole life. Talking through your problems with others may help or even therapy but there is always a path to happiness, it may not be the road you ever thought you would take and it might mean you readjusting your ideas of happiness. Remember, it is not the things that happen to us that are important, but the way we react to them.
Next time you feel overwhelmed, take a breath, reevaluate and see if you can choose happiness.
