Creating a "new normal" in unsettling times

As we find ourselves in unusual territory right now, remember you're not alone.

We are all going through this together.

As more of us find ourselves heading into self-isolation, social distancing and working from home.  We're creating a new normal.

Now, more than ever we need to choose to be the light.

I get it.

It's hard when you reach for the radio or TV and see the latest updates on the news.

Or opening social media to see posts containing horror stories that's taking place across the globe. 

Or perhaps you're living tough times with loss of income or health issues right now.

These are unsettling times and our world that we knew before will be different after all this.

But my friend, let me remind you that you have this moment right now; this present place.  You also have control over your mind and what you choose to focus on.

We are all creating a "new normal" in these unusual circumstances we find ourselves in.

The emotions will come in waves and that's perfectly normal.  At one point of the day, you might feel full of hope and positive; the next you could be in floods of tears fearful and questioning what the world will be like for you.  

You're not alone, this is completely natural to feel this way.

Ride that wave of emotions, let it flow, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Here's a few things you can do to help you during these unsettling times:-

  • Create new routines; with self-isolation, working from home and having the kids about all the time, will restructure your daily pattern.  So make a routine that works for you right now.  Create a daily schedule that helps to keep a routine of normality for you and your family.  Get everyone on board with house chores, work, set meal times and game time (even dig out the board games to bring family spirit and vibes up)
  • Make a list of all the things you can do at home; odd jobs that you may have put off because you've been too busy or not got round to doing, learn a language or picking up on some self-development through online learning that you've perhaps wanted to do.  Map out when you want to do this in your daily plan.  We love to evolve and learn so make the most of this time.
  • What daily habits can you do at home?  Maintaining your norm is a comfort blanket of habit.  So ask yourself what daily habits can you continue doing each day at home - following videos to exercise classes in your living room, meditation, journalling or practicing yoga.  Coffee with your friend every Tuesday turns into video chat with a cuppa. Whatever your daily habits, now is the time to keep these flowing into your 'new' daily routine.
  • Self-care is vital more than anything right now; factor in self-care time as part of your daily routine.  If it helps create a list of all the things you can do in your home surroundings.  Soak in the tub, walk around the garden, read a book, sit with a cuppa in your favourite spot be sure to get this into your day.  If you've got a number of people in your home right now then agree when you need 'your self-care' time and what this will involve so that you're not disturbed.
  • Maintain a positive outlook - the world is changing with new measures being introduced daily.  Change operating at full-pace is unnerving.  Bring yourself to the present; all that you have is this moment. Take a deep breath and focus on what's happening for you right now.  You can control what's going on for you in this place here. Approach each new day as it comes; Today is all you need to concentrate on.

Us humans thrive on being of service, so ask yourself how you can help others in need during these troubling times.  Work together and with your communities to be supportive and helpful in whatever way you can.
