What to do when you're feeling stuck
Just 3 out of 10 people are happy with their lives. So many feel stuck in a rut in their career, or trapped in their job or work situation because they can't see a way out or where to even begin. If this is you, then I encourage you to read on.
Take a moment to picture this.
You're standing in a deep puddle, watching the water and mud slowly cover the front of your shoes. You watch your feet slip deeper into the muddy gloop. As you try to lift one foot out, it feels heavy. You’ve got to use all of your energy and mite to get this foot out of the thick mud.
As the mud gives, you're able to lift your foot out into the open. It feels free and so good to be able to move again.
This feeling is not too different when you're feeling stuck with a situation in your life.
At the time, we sink into something because it’s presented itself at the right time or it felt like the best option to take. But once we’ve sat there for a while it seems impossible to lift ourselves out of that situation. We start to feel stuck and trapped.
We’ve all been there. But as we get older, for some reason it feels harder to lift ourselves out of the ‘mud/feeling stuck’.
If you’re feeling this pain in your life right now, then know this… you can change this.
You can shift from feeling stuck and unsure of where to go next.
Often it’s knowing where to start first. Think back over that shifting our foot in the mud, we know there’s a way to lift our foot out to become unstuck.
So when you’re in this place, how do you start getting unstuck?
Here’s the remedy you can put into practice...
- What are you feeling stuck about? Call it out, write it down, shout it out. It may seem pretty obvious but if we don’t ‘name or identify’ what is in fact making us feel like this way, we can’t really resolve it or move forward.
- Where do you want to be? This might be the ‘hazy unknown’ area, because if you knew that you probably wouldn't be feeling stuck! But deep down, you'll have an idea and this is the perfect opportunity to do some real soul searching. If you already have an idea of where you want to be, then brilliant, this is your starting point to focus on.
- What needs to change? Often the hardest and challenging part is being honest with yourself about the changes that need to be made. There might be some slight tweaks that you can make, or perhaps there are some real big changes that you need to carry out. Either way, get clear on these and remember, if you don't make a change what will you continue to experience in your life? Keep reminding yourself about this each time you find it difficult to make those changes or you find an excuse not to.
- What action can you start taking? Make a commitment and promise to yourself. Write out at least 3 things you can start doing to get you out of mud. Share them in the comments below to help you keep accountable to yourself.
Little steps are perfect if it feels overwhelming, or that you're not making any progress. Keep a track of your successes and quick wins too! This will definitely help you to feel that you're getting unstuck.
Remember, you can make anything happen. Every situation has a choice and an option - it's up to us which way we choose to go.
