This week's challenge was to try and make the most of home cooking and preparing your own fresh food. This was easily the most deceptively difficult challenge of the three I've taken part in, due to the acknowledgment that I don't cook a lot of my own food, and that I adapted the challenge slightly.
I take my lunch into work every day, but weekday breakasts are nonexistent. Fortunately as I currently live with my family, I'm pretty much assured of a home-cooked heartening meal most of the time.
This past week has been a strangely satisfying experience - I've been supplementing my snacks with fruit (not exactly homemade but very fresh), and in learning more about how to prepare fresh meals from my dad who trained as a chef in a previous life.
One thing I did find myself really enjoying doing more was baking - I love to bake and I found myself making a chocolate fudge cake on the Saturday and then scones on the Sunday, which was really enjoyable and nicely dovetailed the whole 'fresh food' experience.
Will I keep it up? Probably not - the idea of preparing everything fresh is a noble idea, but when you're running out of the door to get to work, it's not always realistic. However, baking more, incorporating more fresh fruit as snacks, and learning more about how to prepare homemade meals? That's something I can absolutely get behind.
