How to recognise and manage stress in your life

It’s everywhere, every single one of us experience this on a daily basis. The dosage quantity may differ daily and different situations may cause it to flare up, but there’s no getting away from the fact the stress is on the increase.

According to the Mental Health Foundations 2018 Survey; in the past year 74% of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope. 

Stress isn’t avoidable, but it is manageable.

Being able to recognise when we are feeling stressed and what triggers this for us, is a great starting point to help ease and deal with what’s causing this in our life.

Stress will impact us physically, mentally and emotionally.  Not necessarily all at the same time but suffering with headaches, upset stomach, difficulty sleeping, loss or increase of appetite and in some cases depression are just some of the symptoms of stress.  

This also has a knock on effect to those around us on a daily basis; our family, friends and work colleagues can often bear the brunt of our stress which then has a domino effect in other’s lives.

As the pressure of busy lifestyles and the demands of modern technology continue to increase, our stress levels start to rise.

So what we can we do about it?

I’m going to share 5 powerful tips on how you can monitor your own stress levels, along with how you can help to ease the stress in your life.

  1. Take the time to check in with yourself; on a piece of paper answer the following questions...
    1. Have you been feeling overwhelmed or nervous about something?  
    2. Have you been in firm control of your behaviour, emotions, thoughts and feelings?  
    3. Have you been feeling that you've been under any strain, stress or pressure?
  2. Make things a little easier for yourself; write out a to-do list to help offload things that need to be done or set reminders for yourself so that they are running around in your mind.  Clearing the space helps to offload and ease the pressure.
  3. Remember that we only have 24 hours in a day!  Repeat this as a mantra, write it on a sticky note if you have to! We can only do what we can in those hours and it's advised that at least 8 of those hours should be for sleeping.  What doesn't get done today, can and will be picked up another day.
  4. Rest, Recharge and Nurture; we cram so much into our days, weeks and months that we leave so little time for ourselves to rest.  Our bodies need to recharge and reset.  It's the vessel that helps us to make all of these busy things possible and if we aren't taking care of it, then it will start to malfunction resulting in not being able to do anything.  Look to introduce a self-care routine that works for YOU.  Take time for you on a rest day (it's called that for a reason!) look to do things that uplift you, revitalise you and help you to feel good.
  5. What changes can you make to your technology time?  Leave your mobile outside of the bedroom, get an alarm clock to wake you instead of your phone.  Switch 'do not disturb' on your phone an hour before you go to bed at night.  Monitor your technology use at the weekend and see how much time you spend on it. Make a commitment to you of how you can ease or reduce the technology in your life, so that you can enjoy time with those around you.

Taking little steps like these in your life, will start to make a difference in your life.

Simple points like number 1 of checking in with yourself, will help you to take control of what's creating the stress and help to ease and prevent it from going too far.

Thank you Josie for your wonderfully practical and insightful article, I loved reading it, I'm working on 2, 3 and 5 and 4 is a recent addtion for me, a day off for me to do what I wish, I realise I do deserve it and its the most wonderful experience to take a day out, just be and do what I love which could be nothing :) .  I will do this more.  I'm also going to keep the questions in point 1 and I am sure I will find them extremeely helpful.  Jasmine
