Your Tree of Life - a Simple Tool to Help You Become Really Clear on What Makes You Unique and Resourceful
I work with people who need a bit of a helping hand to rediscover what makes them shine, be energised and succeed. This post gives a simple tool to help you become really clear on what makes you unique and resourceful
Thought it was about time I shared another of my coaching tools.
This can be used when working on your own, as well as when you are working with a coach. Great to use with teams, your partner, children and friends. It can really stimulate conversations and thinking
This Tree of Life was inspired by a different tree used by an artist/facilitator as a warm up during a craft workshop I was on. I love trees so decided to develop the idea to use within my coaching practice.
When a client comes to coaching we usually touch on values and strengths fairly early on in the coaching programme in some way. This tool is a way of pulling together thinking and insight around the beliefs that anchor you, the values that keep you upright, your strengths, your successes and what you achieve, what nurtures you and who you attract and give sustenance to. It can be used for an individual or an organisation and is particularly interesting to use as a team exercise with leadership teams.
Sometimes I use it after other work around beliefs. This means that the client has had chance to better understand their core beliefs, what is useful to them and what beliefs are no longer helpful. At other times I use it early on in a coaching programme to help people think creatively.
I have found that for some clients the beliefs and values part of the Tree flow easily but they can get stuck on strengths. In these cases we sometimes play with perceptual positions - thinking about what others would say about the clients strengths
Have a go and draw up your own Tree of Life.
- What are you core beliefs? Which are useful and which may be holding you back?
- What are your most important values? How can and how do you honour them?
- What are your real strengths? Which of these energise and inspire you?
- What are the results of your being?
- Who do you attract and who benefits from your presence and being?
- How do you nurture and "feed" yourself so you can be your very best self?
The watering can helps you think about resilience. The birds and butterflies (you'd never guess what they are!) represent the people, things that are attracted to and thrive around you or your organisation.
Hope you like this Tree. It's a simple tool that stimulates some fairly deep thinking and can be adapted to lots of different situations.
A bit about me
As a former Chief Executive, I now work as an independent coach and mentor. I love my work as a coach and get great satisfaction and joy from watching my clients grow and succeed
My clients often describe their work with me as challenging, energising, thought provoking and practical. Take a look at my Linked In page to get a feel for how client's see their experience of investing in coaching
Outside of my coaching work, I paint a bit, sew bright. flowery fabric together to make quilts, help run a community Arts Festival and support my husband's studio glass business
Please get in touch if I can ever be of any help.
