World Values Day - How Knowing Your Values Helps

Most of the people I work with find it helpful to think about their core values. What drives them? What’s most important to them? What’s going on in their relationships with certain people? What would help guide their decisions? 

Being clear about your own values can help you make better decisions, work more effectively with others and feel more confident. 

Sometimes people are really clear about their values but this isn’t always the case. I’m working with a woman right now who initially identified over 20 “important values” in her life. We were using values cards (cards with a value written on one side) and she just couldn’t put many of the cards onto the “not important” pile. 

This client had come to coaching to try and find clarity in life. Things were a bit tough in terms of exiting a long term relationship and deciding which direction to take her business.  She was exhausted and going round in circles. 

We spent part of her first session reflecting on past successes. What had been going on, what she did, what she was saying to herself, what she was feeling, what practical help has she put in place. We then went on to turn this into a personal wheel of success ingredients for her to use as a check in and planning tool on the future.

Having grounded herself in remembering she could be successful and happy we started looking at values

Eventually, after a bit of caring challenge and gentle prodding she got down to her 5 core values and sat back and cried

The emotion came  from realising that certain things were her bedrock and anchors in life. By honouring these more she realised that she would have  the resilience to make the right decisions  and take her life forward. 

If you want to think a bit more about your own values ask yourself a few questions?

What’s most important  to me about xxx? (Where x is the context - work, home, relationships) 

What else is important? 

What else?

And what else? 

What’s really important? 

Note everything  down then go back to your list. Take 2 values at a time and ask yourself which is most important. 

Carry on doing this until you've got an ordered list of your 5 most important values

Take this knowledge with you and use it to shape decisions, understand your responses to things and build your confidence.

Sustainability is very important to me, so my work is designed and delivered in ways that give clients tools and approaches to use to maintain and build on their successes after their work with me is completed.
