It can be so easy for us all - at times - to get bogged down with the day to day dealings of life, negative news stories and other bits of 'stuff' that don't do us any favours. It's in these moments we can forget to stop and appreciate all of the great things (big & small) that can make us smile. This is why, each month I will be sharing a few 'top picks' that have done just that for me. In this first blog, I take a look at spending time outdoors and share a recipe for my new favourite smoothie.

I'm going to hedge my bets and say that Summer is well and truly here.    Aside from the great weather we've been having recently, here are a few other things that have been brightening my days in June.

Totally Scrumptious Banana Smoothie

I'm bananas for bananas.  So much so, that sometimes I buy a few too many...

In the spirit of waste not want not, (I really don't like throwing away food) I have a great smoothie recipe for those slightly overripe bananas I had lying in the fruit bowl.  Packed full of nutrients, it's a quick and delicious way to help you reach those 10 portions of fruit and veg a day (how many?!), as mentioned by Hazel Wallace @thefoodmedic in this month's Psychologies Magazine.

As you'll see, my methods of measurement are Hanna precise rather than actually precise...

Ingredients

2 bananas 

Juice of 1 lemon

A couple of dollops of Greek style yogurt

A cup of almond milk

Sprinkle of cinnamon

Sprinkle of ginger

1 tablespoon of chia seeds

Give it all a whizz in a blender and hey presto - yum!


Get your Plog on

What better way to start your day than with an early morning plog?  No, I hadn't heard of it either until very recently, but Plogging is the latest Scandinavian lifestyle trend to sweep the nation (quite literally).

Hailing from Sweden, Plogging (an adaptation of the Swedish 'plocka upp,' which means 'pick up,') sees groups of joggers picking up litter together while out on their run.  Since it's beginnings in 2016, this Good Samaritan's workout has largely increased in popularity this year, with groups starting up around the UK, other parts of Europe and even across the pond.  Exercising whilst making friends and doing your bit for the environment - what more could you want?


Tat's Devine!

I feel I'm a bit late to the party with this one, but I have recently discovered the super fun jewellery designs of Tatty Devine.  Originating in London during the late 90's, Tatty Devine is known for it's chunky and stylish perspex jewellery, all of which are hand made in the UK.  My personal favourites are their Votes for Women necklace (to commemorate the centenary of women successfully gaining the vote) and their very pretty Swallow necklace.  Tatty marvellous!



Back to Nature

In the spirit of #30DaysWild, inspired by fellow Psychologies Ambassador Claire Cremona, I have loved getting outdoors in June.  Due to the nature of my job, I am all too often sat indoors with my head buried behind a computer screen.   Sometimes, I become so engrained in what I am doing, I forget to take that time to reconnect with nature.  It's up to me to make that time and with the weather as glorious as it is at the moment, I hardly need any further persuasion!  Venturing outdoors this month has led me to discover the most beautiful park not too far from where I live.

My explorations this month led to the discovery of this beautiful lake at Cuerdan Valley Park in Lancashire.

Reconnecting with nature doesn't need to stop outdoors, though.  I have loved dotting fresh flowers and plants around my home this month.  Bringing a little bit of the wilderness indoors brightens up the rooms, oxygenates the air and is guaranteed to make anyone smile.
