What a difference a year makes.

I have a dirty secret.

I can’t use an iPhone calendar.

Ok that’s a lie, I can use an iPhone calendar, I just hate everything about it. Yep, YOU HEARD!

For as long as I can remember I’ve had a paper diary. An important date? An invitation? Just wait a minute, I need to consult my leather-bound little friend.

It might sound backward, even weird, not to have moved into the digital era but to me there’s something truly magical about opening an empty book at the start of each year. The smell of new paper, pages of possibilities, a blank canvas of time waiting to be created, shaped, lived. Who will I be a year from now? What will I be doing? Will I finally have given up sugar?!

In the few days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve when most people are OD-ing on childhood films and 50% discount sales, I flick through the pages of my soon-to-be old diary reminiscing the year gone by and reflecting on how much I’ve achieved, where I’ve been and the people I’ve met. I don’t quite know why, but it gives me tingles. I’ve always been ambitious and curious, adventures are everything to me and I’m unapologetically a FOMO offender. I suppose that’s the reason I haven’t quite grasped work-life balance, I want to do EVERYTHING! Having a paper diary allows me to see exactly what I’m doing, how I’m spending my time and what matters to me most. My very own 12 month Psychoanalysis if you will.

Today is the 23rd of December 2017 and I’ll soon be holding my new diary for 2018. Am I excited, yes, am I nervous, always, are all my dreams going to come true in 2018, probably.

I’ll see you on the other side.
