What Is Good Mental Health?

As World Mental Health Day approaches on October 10th, it's a good time to focus upon the positive meaning of mental health and well-being, rather than upon psychiatric symptoms, diagnoses or treatments.

There are several causes and reasons for our state of mind.

These include how our brain is functioning at the time, the way we think about our life, the quality of the relationships we've had since birth, exercise, fun, and of course what we eat or don't eat – which have a profound effect upon our moods, perception and vitality.

What does good, robust mental health look like?

Here's what I think it includes -

  • Emotional stability and self-regulation

  • Rational thinking, and an ability to control and disarm any irrational thoughts

  • A positive self-esteem and body image

  • The ability to withstand challenges and criticism

  • Not allowing the past to negatively affect the present or future - and therapeutically healing trauma from the past

  • Showing genuine care and compassion towards children, animals and the vulnerable in society

  • Having a sense of empathy and sympathy towards others

  • Not obediently going along with the crowd - but of finding your own positive path, based upon your values and sense of purpose

  • Congruence - what is felt on the inside is portrayed sensitively and assertively on the outside

  • Authenticity - being real and genuine, and only wearing a ‘mask’ if you consciously choose to, for a short time, and for a specific and valid purpose

Layers of family conditioning, trauma, and the creation of a negative life S.C.R.I.P.T © will get in the way of our best intentions and our positive mental health.

Talking therapies, body therapies and nutrition/herbal medicine all have their place and this is why I advocate what I call a 'whole-brain and holistic' approach to mental health. One size never fits all.

So, with this in mind how about enhancing your own mental health – because a little bit of self-awareness and self-care each day will reap long-term rewards in all areas of your life.
