Play big or go home. No regrets. All out. Be who you are. Don't play small. They're phrases we're hear all the time through social media. But what do they really mean in the context of the 9 to 5 and how do we do them?

I've been reading about data science projects. It takes me back many moons ago to when I was studying organisational behaviour. Naively I asked the professor, "doesn't it drive you nuts that all you do is keep refining the question? Isn't the solution what organisations really care about?"

You see the thing about having lots of data is that it's most useful when you know how to extract value from it. And the way to do that is to start with the right question!

Seems so obvious doesn't it? But I wonder, as humans if we routinely ask ourselves the right questions? Do we ask ourselves questions that have us stand tall and play full out, or ones that keep us small and safely confined by our fears.

Do we ask ourselves ...

  • Will this action be career limiting?
  • Who am I to ....?
  • Surely someone else has already thought of this?

Or do we ask ourselves questions that self empower us ...

  • What's really important here?
  • What's the best that can happen?
  • If not now, when?
  • Who am I not to take the lead on this?

Certain corporate environments lack a sense of psychological safety. Employees opt to hide rather than risk exposure to embarrassment, rejection or potential failure. It seems easier to comply or take the conventional route than take the risk to play a bigger game. Sadly, the cost is stifled opinions and brilliant ideas. Victim mindsets and the blame game prevail over entrepreneurial spirit.

If we want to occupy the space we deserve at work, we need to check we're asking ourselves questions that leave us feeling empowered and inspired.

  1. Ask yourself what's the emotional soundtrack that's running you behind the scenes? Are you being energised by passion, excitement, joy, fulfilment and inner ease on a daily basis? Or are you depleted by fear, apprehension, frustration, resentment and disappointment?
  2. Decide to take charge of your emotions. They don't have to run you. Get to know your stress reaction
  3. Train your monkey mind.
  4. Own your strengths.
  5. Remember that regardless of position, status or salary, we all have human needs in common.
