We have some exciting news to share with you :) The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation has just published a new book entitled, 'Reflections on Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Stories of Courage, Determination and Hope’, which is co-edited by Nicole Schnackenberg, one of our staff members here at the Minded Institute.

The book contains the lived experiences of thirty-six people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and their loved ones. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a preoccupation with a perceived defect, or defects, in one’s appearance. These ‘flaws’ are usually a normal physical variation - only slight to the objective observer – yet can cause significant shame and distress to someone experiencing BDD.

Around 2% of the general population experience BDD, making it more common than both schizophrenia and anorexia nervosa. It occurs equally in both sexes, and the onset is most frequent in adolescence. Tragically, it has one of the highest suicide rates of any mental illness.

Many of the contributors to this volume cite mindfulness-based practices as being supportive to them in their recovery with one contributor, Joanna, speaking primarily about the impact of yoga on her BDD; she also includes some beautiful photographs of herself practicing yoga.

The book will be officially released this Saturday on the date of the Second International BDD Conference in London on 26th November 2016.

The book is available on LULU now on the link below.
