This is a loving and gentle reminder that the Early Day Motion for bringing yoga into the NHS is still live…and it falls to each of us to take concerted action.

As you may recall, back in September of last year, Simon Stevens, NHS England’s chief executive, pledged to launch an initiative to improve staff health and cut the growing amount of sick leave. As part of this initiative, NHS staff are to be offered health checks, Zumba, and yoga classes whilst at work as part of a major drive to improve the wellbeing of the country’s biggest workforce.

Then, on the 14th June 2016, an Early Day Motion (EDM) put forward by the Yoga4NHS steering group was granted by the House of Commons. An EDM is a formal motion for a topic to be debated and brings attention to the cause. This EDM outlines how the House of Commons recognises that yoga is a multi-dimensional approach to encouraging well-being; appreciates the link between physical and psychological health and lifestyle; appreciates that yoga is a reflective and non-invasive practice, which is appropriate in all stages of life; recommends yoga to be included as part of mindfulness and well-being initiatives for NHS staff and for yoga to be integrated within treatment for patients; and urges the Department for Education to introduce yoga in the school physical education curriculum.

The EDM is currently backed by Bob Blackman, MP, amongst 28 others, but we still need more local MPS to get involved. To support the EDM, those interested are invited to write to their local MP asking them to back, and sign, the Motion. The EDM can be viewed online at http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2016-17/215 and a draft letter to send to your MP can be obtained at email@themindedinstitute.com. Every voice and signature counts and can truly make all the difference in manifesting the dream to embed yoga into the National Health Service.
