Wek 47: Kill Your Television?

A little bit of Strictly anyone?

Television can get a bad press. For our family, it has its place. It is a companion for mum on the long days when she doesn't see anyone before my return from work; it provides relaxation for my son in the form of Danger Mouse and the crazyness of Adventure Time. My teen girls watch little but their visual diet comes from social media, vlogs, blogs and box sets of Friends. Simon and I use it as a way of winding down with QI, Strictly and not much else. We are not unintelligent people. We engage with current affairs, read avidly and are political. I don't feel that the television has turned us into passive robot consumerists. It has its place but doesn't dominate.

We have had to be aware of its more desruptive aspects though. 24 hour news has moved news into a form of entertainment rather than information and opinion. So we gain our news from the internet and Radio 4. I can't watch gritty realism: I watched the amazing Line of Duty and couldn't sleep after watching it! And to be honest life can be busy so when the chores are complete, a walk, meditation and reading are my go to activities.

So I guess we are like a lot of Life Lab readers - not glued to a screen, rather selective about what we watch. So do I need to Kill My Television (which just reminds me of 90s Indie kids!) nah! If I felt it stopped me from doing other things perhaps, but I would never stop myself from doing something else because of what was on the box. So I'll keep it as a little pleasure!

Mother, wife, daughter, teacher...

Firmly stuck in the 'sandwich generation' category, I am 46 years old and looking to shake things up a bit! I am a teacher, which I love - but it takes over your life! A mother of three - two daughters, 16 and 15, a son aged 11. Wife to Simon for 19 years. Carer for rather eccentric mum, aged 89.
