Notice what you notice

The challenge this week was to carry around a notebook and record anything that resonates with us.

We have been living in our apartment since late May and every day the brown wooden horizontal blinds which Sarah keeps on threatening to replace have always been up, never down. This was simply because the views are beautiful on all sides. Then one night Sarah decided to bring the blinds down. She said something about winter coming in and we should start putting the blinds down late afternoon as the sun goes down to keep the heat in, or something along those lines. I, still feeling the effects of a cold was more than happy to do so. The following morning the first thing that resonated with me was the look of the apartment as the sun shone through the slats of the blinds against the walls. For some reason it reminded me of American TV cop shows from the seventies I used to enjoy watching as a kid and a feeling that hope and something better was out there and achievable. Maybe there is an episode of Kojak or Columbo or Starsky and Hutch which looks like our apartment. I don’t know but there was definitely a warm feeling of déjà vu about this.

Later in the morning I opened the blinds and watched the beautiful skyline. It was about this time, cold in full flow, that I realised this week’s challenge of tuning up/tuning in is something I’ve learned to develop through the ‘wake up’ journey and is something I live with and am aware of on a daily basis. There has been so much I’ve learned about myself through the journey and so much around me seems new and yet old as time. I feel connected to the landscape and the changes in the seasons. I spot beauty whenever it presents itself to me and often I go looking for it and find it incredibly easy to locate. I wake up to it, taste it through the day and by night time I’ve swallowed some of it and it’s in me when I fall asleep. When I wake up the next day I just reconnect.

I don’t know if I sound smug in my blogs with the happiness I’ve found on this journey. Before I set off on the journey I wasn’t looking for something life changing or expecting to find so many answers. But I did find something along the way. Through the challenges I looked deep into myself, and I found honesty and courage in abundance and creativeness willing to spill out all over the place. And from that I’ve got so much from the journey and never once felt disappointed. This week’s challenge was something I already do. I find beauty and magic everywhere and I never worry if I stop finding it because I know I never will. It’s always been there and always will be there. I recognise it and appreciate for what it is – it is golden. It’s around me all the time and more importantly I enjoy being around the person I am – these truly are better days.

“Now a life of leisure and a pirates treasure don’t make much for tragedy

But it’s a sad man my friend who’s living in his own skin and can’t stand the company

Every fool’s got a reason to feel sorry for himself and turning his heart stone.

Tonight this fool’s half way to heaven and just a mile out of hell but I feel like I’m coming home”
