Week 43: The joy of clothes!

Wear the same outfit for a week...

Dress in the same outfit for a week? I am sorry Chris but I am stepping aside for this one. Why? Because I love clothes! Deciding what to wear is not a chore for me: I love thinking about what could work with what, dressing for the mood I am in or the mood I would like to be in.

I have expensive tastes, but not the accompanying cash! So a pleasure for me is to scrutinise my favourite clothes websites (Toast mainly!) and then go hunting in the high street stores or charity shops to find clothes that echo their style and quality. In fact, I am sure Oxfam is fast becoming the most interesting shop in my very middle-class, aspirational, and a bit boring, high street.

I have grown to like my looks and it has taken time to get here. From a mixed European cultural background, my looks are a little different but I love that now. I have grown into my style of clothing and it is part of my identity.

I definitely have a capsule wardrobe – navy, black, grey, blue - and this alleviates any stress of decision making as most things fit together. I refuse to wear anything constrictive or uncomfortable and if I fancy a splash of pattern I go to my collection of scarves. I enjoy looking fashionable, artistic, creative but I am absolutely not a slave to fashion. Ditching that servitude long ago was a liberating experience. I also really enjoy seeing what other people wear, whether really relaxed or high end fashion I think it is wonderful to see someone feeling good about themselves or experimenting with new looks.

So I will pass on this experiment. To me clothing is a pleasure and I wouldn’t want to deny myself the little excitement of thinking what I will wear tomorrow!

Mother, wife, daughter, teacher...

Firmly stuck in the 'sandwich generation' category, I am 46 years old and looking to shake things up a bit! I am a teacher, which I love - but it takes over your life! A mother of three - two daughters, 16 and 15, a son aged 11. Wife to Simon for 19 years. Carer for rather eccentric mum, aged 89.

"They seek her here, they seek her there, her clothes are loud but never square... she's a dedicated follower of fashion (sometimes - yeah-yeah!) I really like this post Jacqui and I love this idea of you searching around a charity shop and in a moment of madness you buy a Tom Baker Dr Who scarf for the sake of it. Superb.

Oh, thank goodness! It's not just me! I could't get my brain to engage with this one either... Charity shops are a fab source, and I also love re-sale shops and eBay (plus the occasional splurge...) You're so right Jacqui, capsule all the way, then add interest with accessories (although my capsule is black, red, grey, dark teal and espresso...)
