On my feet in Paris...

In week 41 of the Great Wake-Up our challenge was to stand up wherever possible during our day.

This week Chris asked us to stand up whenever possible; I, however, had other plans...

Standing gave me a place to start though, bringing focus to my feet. Wake Up has been an amazing journey for me so far, and I have my feet to thank for so much of it, carrying me from adventure to adventure. Which brings me to this weeks update - Paris!

A few months ago, in the spirit of Wake Up, I decided to fulfil a dream and book myself a few days on my own to wander the streets of Paris. So this week that's what I did. Although I've travelled alone for business before, this was my first holiday alone, and it was a great experience! I made vague plans each day, i.e. what direction to start off in, and turned down whichever path beckoned.

One day, I found myself giving directions (note, if you knew me you would fall off your chair laughing at this point...) to a Frenchman (seriously!) - I can only hope he found his way, but he said I was "tres gentile", bless him! Another morning, I was walking through the flower market as it opened, and found myself helping a (very short) older French lady put up her hanging baskets. Funnily enough, I'd read an article just Monday that the secret of happiness is being useful, and, given those instances, I'd say he's onto something. I'm still smiling at those moments of connection with strangers.

Well, that and my memories of the parks! Have you ever been to the older parts of Paris? You seriously can't walk more than about ten minutes without finding a park of some description - there are tiny (or huge) green pockets with comfy benches everywhere! And there are always people using them - chatting with friends, relaxing with a book, or just watching the world go by.

I had a go at the latter myself and found that, even in Paris, I am still myself. I can't do "just sitting". So I read, which was no hardship! And then I walked...

It seems, Chris, standing still isn't for me, but let me walk and my feet can take me anywhere!
