What trees can show us about change

I love this time of year.  It feels like a time of endings, of stripping back and laying bare, and I find a beauty in structures.  I am watching as the trees let go their leaves, their outer shape, and reveal the deeper structure that supports that foliage through the spring and summer.

This puts me in mind of the work of psychotherapy.  Often it is the leaves of our lives that bring us into a therapy room.  Our stories, the meaning we are making of the things that happen to us.  Yet when you step back, you might notice the specific stories come and go, in a year's time we may not even remember what it was that so distressed us today.

This does not mean that our stories do not matter however.  Their importance lies in what they reveal about our deeper structure.  There will be patterns in what we experience, how we interact in the world and what we perceive about relationships.  If we can use our stories and what is happening currently as a gateway to these deeper patterns, then we can really get into therapeutic work.

Like the trees, we may need to shed some leaves, and be prepared to lay ourselves a little bare, if we are to explore what is repeatedly occuring.  This may not always be the most comfortable experience, but it is one that can lead to new growth, and a sense of fulfilment and beauty.

If you would like Spring 2019 to be a little different, to bring to life a sense of your personal growth over the winter months, then get in touch.
