A key task of psychotherapy is to connect clients with their own wisdom.  So often, we are unaware of the richness of our own experience and we draw on only a fraction of the knowledge and wisdom we have available.

One simple way of checking this out is this:

Next time you feel stuck, and are not sure what to do, ask yourself who/what would be confident in this situation?  You might call to mind a friend, a family member, a film character, a cartoon, an archetypal animal or something from nature.   For example, what would Yoda say?  What would an eagle see?  What advice would your Gran have given you?

The funny thing is, when you ask these questions, most often, you know the answers.  Using a metaphor or someone else's perspective seems to offer access to stuff that was previously out of our reach, and that can open up new possibilities and options.

You are quite literally never alone, because you carry the memory of everyone and everything you have experienced along with you.  How will you make use of it today?
