QUANTUM PHYSICS + COACHING

Follow the ball, not the players. Notice what is happening in between. In the space. In what looks like nothing, is in fact everything.

So I have to put my hands up. Straight away.

I watched a film on Netflix the other night, you may have seen it too - HEAL

It's a mediocre ramble through alternative healing. I mean, it's a pleasant, if slightly slow look at how positive thinking can cure physical ailments. Pretty anti orthodox  medicine and is the kind of thing you would find in the corners of YouTube 10 years ago, but with a heart that says we have more power than we give ourselves credit for.

A quarter way through Bruce Lipton makes a statement that causes a mini eruption in my mind. He starts talking about how quantum physics suggests that there is no such thing as a solid. That our concept of matter, and 'what things are' is a construct, as in reality we are all just a collection of particles with a lot of space in the middle. In relationship with each other through, what he calls 'a force'.

Now, I know NOTHING about science. (I enjoyed Chemistry at school, but I think that was because it was the closest thing to art in a lab, in my adolescent opinion.)

I know nothing, and so, I appreciate that this may not be hitting you in quite the revolutionary way that it did me, but it made me sit up and think,

'Well, what am I then?'

Well, by Bruce's view, just a huge collection of particles, vibrating and oscillating around each other, forming structure, patterns and routines. Particles with set behaviors and habits. Then I thought...

'So what is all this stuff in between them? What is this stuff in between us?'

I then had my 'Inception' / 'The Matrix' moment (apologies for the endless movie references, I'm a child of the 80s, movies were our thing). The perspective drew out and I got thinking about the big picture.

At the subatomic level, we are particles, resonating and relating to each other. Guided and shaped by a vibrational force between us.

And of course, at the Human level, we are particles, resonating and relating to each other. Guided and shaped by a vibrational force between us.

And here's where I am at today with it.

After sitting and mulling over this concept for a few nights, it got me thinking about how we organise ourselves as humans; especially in a work setting. It also got me thinking about how we coach, in an organisational setting. How I coach, in an organisational setting.

I think I have been too focused on the particles. The people. The Human sitting in front of me. The humans sitting throughout the organisation. Each one of them unique, individually experiencing and interpreting the reality of their shared environment.

Whereas I know that devoting my attention and focus to the body, of particles, I am now incredibly alert to the other force - The relationships between them. The energy field, the electromagneticism that is part of the co-created learning, development and awareness.

Having now shifted my focus slightly, and encouraging my clients to focus more on their relationships, and indeed, our relationship, it has in turn drawn a deeper awareness on what it is that sits within this space. The activity, the energy in that space between us all is Communication.

After all, relationships are built, maintained and destroyed through communication. I would go so far to say relationships ARE communication. Communication is the energy between us, it is what shapes us, and our environment.

By learning to notice the space. By learning to intuitively connect with that energy, through the many different channels and bandwidths of communication, can we start to gain deeper insight to what is going on, in the person and in the environment?

We coexist. We don't exist. Without the connections between us, do we even exist?

This then brought me right back to Gestalt and in turn Field Theory. An organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts.

So I invite you all to 'follow the ball' as my brother used to shout at the TV on a Saturday. Follow the ball, not the players. Notice what is happening in between. In the space. In what looks like nothing, is in fact everything.

In other news, the following night I watched a film called Isn't It Romantic. Just for the sake of balance, of course!

I am obsessed with communication. How we do it, why we do it, when it goes wrong and when it goes right. Humans and the spaces between them are what keep me alive. Coaching is Relationships. We are Relationships. I firmly believe that, by keeping things simple and intuitive is what makes for great work. My approach is to encourage self awareness from the people I work with. I foster an environment where positive, healthy, compassionate challenge is possible. ICF ACC accredited, student of Transactional Analysis and life long learner. Behind me is a 15 year career in TV Production. Back then, my big goal was to work for the biggest show in the world, so that's what I did. Big and spectacular was important to me then. I understand what it is to have a burning gut of ambition. I then realised in 2016 why I did a BA in Communications. I then added a Foundation to Counselling Diploma to my tool box, and the learning journey continues.
