For this week, Chris challenged us to bin the old Gogglebox, and to see what emerged...

I'm a modern(ish) twentysomething who sort-of loves TV - when I was an undergrad student, I enjoyed it more and watched it a lot more (due to sheer time available), consuming rubbish and excellence with both hands. However, I've fortunate enough that I've become more selective with my TV tastes, meaning that I can avoid TV for a day or two if needs be.

This week's challenge, therefore, would have been a nightmare for early 2010s Chris, and was a little more manageable for current Chris. It wasn't easy - I've been indulging in HBO's Westworld (which is excellent), catching up on 'Mr Robot', and toying with bingeing on 'The Missing' (didn't see the first season; everyone from my work colleagues to my yoga teacher has been raving about it), and so to deliberately avoid it was more of a struggle than if I had been indifferent and not watched it out of a sense of malaise.

It did free up some extra time, however - rather than watching some TV after my postgrad studies, I caught with some friends on social media, listened to some podcasts and radio plays I'd been meaning to catch up but let slide, and even got in some Christmas prep (presents all wrapped, cards mostly written)!

I don't know if I can make the full transition to a TV-less life - even though I get most of my media from the Internet, I still like watching the news on TV, and there are some amazing, amazing TV shows out there. However, I don't think you should ever let it control your life - watch what you like, but in moderation, just like with everything. Simple.
