Journaling is a very useful technique to deploy when facing change – even change that is most welcome – as it helps to work through the issues that can otherwise swamp your thinking. Remember that it is natural to feel anxiety when faced with sudden change as this is the brain’s defence mechanism kicking in to keep you safe. Acknowledging how you feel is the first step and be compassionate to yourself, as you would to another person facing similar situations.

Being compassionate means noticing the feelings, accepting that they are valid but choosing which ones you want to act upon.  After all thoughts are just thoughts, feelings are just feelings until we act upon them and they become behaviour. 

Here is a technique that can help you gain perspective. Begin by considering the following questions:

What’s the best that can happen?

What’s most likely to happen?

What’s the worst that can happen?

Write down your thoughts. Then consider your options. Now you can make choices that enable you to move forward towards the best-case scenario.

This is a useful exercise that helps focus on the possible rather than the impossible, and that way progress can happen.
