5 signs you may need a coach

Before I really got involved in coaching, I think I thought I wasn't the sort of person that would have a coach. I'm not really sure exactly why I thought that, but it was probably around not really knowing what a coach does and thinking that only someone who was really ambitious would have one. Since I received coaching, I can't tell people about it enough and I realise I would have had a much easier time at some stages in my life had I had one. So what might be some signs that you could benefit from a coach?

1. You notice that you are stuck in a rut.

This could be a rut in terms of your work or you could be noticing the same things happening again and again in relationships. If you ever catch yourself saying 'here we go again' (internal eye roll optional) this might be a good pointer that you're recognising that something is unhealthy for you, but you're stuck with a productive way of moving forward. A coach can help with this by exploring lots of different options with you for moving out of that rut, investigating your motivation and what is holding you back from change.

2. You look at where you are with your job/career and think I have no idea how I ended up here

If your professional life is not fulfilling you, then you don't have to stick with it. But if it is something you sort of fell into after school or uni or returning from a career break, it is difficult to even work out what else you could do. A coach can help by getting you to think about your values, what really inspires you, what strengths you have and how you can combine these. 

3. You know what you would like to change but you lack confidence.

You do know what sets your soul on fire and what you think you could be doing with your life, but you struggle to see how on earth you could ever do that. People like you just don't do that, right? Wrong. And a coach can help you tap into all the fantastic things you have ever achieved to see how you can carry that energy forward. A coach can help on many levels with this from mindset and cognition to behavioural tips and practice for interviews and networking situations.

4. You have approximately 1467 goals but aren't making headway on them.

It's not that you're not motivated, but 24 hours in a day are just not enough to get everything done. You have a list of all the things you would love to achieve (even if it's just in your head) but for some reason some of them just never make it into reality. A coach can help here by going through your prioritisation, sequencing and organisation. From visualisation so you know where to start, to time management techniques, coaching will get you moving on those dreams.

5. There's nothing really wrong with life, but you feel that it could be better.

You know plenty of people have it worse, you're not depressed, but you just have a sneaking suspicion that you could be happier, if you just knew what to change. Using exercises like the Wheel of Anything, a coach can help you investigate where your life needs the most change, helps you discover your motivation, is your critical friend, a strong supporter and keeps you accountable to your goals.
